Windows color my view
Of a world filled with color.
To see them clearly, I must
Clearly step outside.
This erratic, beautiful,
Natural world is truly, truly
Breath-taking. And with my
Breath gone, I take it in
Anew.

Love.
Pain.
The way the woman next to me on the subway smells.
The way the dead leaf wafts from the tree long after its death.
Joy.
Frustration.
The vibrant sounds of drumming from an exuberant boy.
The tiny interruptions to your one, long thought.
Spent.
Gained.
The mild fatigue at the end of a tremendous day.
The hand held in tender understanding.
That
Is the way it is.

There is
A heart-shaped
Rock.
We call it
Our garden.

Spring arrived on schedule: March 20-something
At such-and-such a time.
In my head and my heart it’s still Winter,
For the morning has dawned with a third
Day of snow since the Spring arrived.
Mother Nature knows irony too well.
And she does it with gusto.
Who ever said this womanly
Personification would ever give in
To our way of thinking?
I clasp two handfuls of the freezing,
Damp ground covering,
Mush the heaven-sent white wonder
Into a satisfying ball of fun
And see if I can make it reach a nearby
Tree.
Ah, success.
The little boy in me is gleefully ready
For the day: Winter or Spring,
It no longer matters.

There’s a late, Spring snow falling outside.
People are dealing with nuclear fallout
In Japan.
It seems strange how the events of
The world and on my back deck
Both affect me.
The impact of each is profoundly
Different. For I still know that it is
Spring even with the snow falling.
I celebrate the change of season
In spite of the seeming evidence
To the contrary.
Nuclear fallout brings a different
Kind of doubt.
How far?
How much?
Am I afraid for more than just me?
Who will be affected?
Will there be suffering?
Is the suffering of one in Japan
Shared by the whole human race?
Haven’t the Japanese people suffered enough
From atomic fallout?
Am I feeling a bit of nationalistic guilt?
I am feeling a lot of compassion, concern,
Love, hope, wishing-for-the-best.
I am holding these out in faith.
The light has not seeped into the
Natural world — at least,
Not in my part of the world — this morning,
Yet I pray that
Light is
Seeping, slapping,
Splashing, crashing, cascading,
Tsunami-ing
Into the hearts of
People all over the world.
