Poem 0153 for Anita: birthday 8 (smile)

Twelve times today
I felt like it was the eleventh hour.
I could barely take a tenth
Of all the stuff that was coming my way.

My nine lives had to make it through
The eight hours of what feels like
Seven days a week — though I know
It’s usually only six.

I only needed a word with five letters;
Well, actually, I needed the meaning and
Especially the vision behind them.
Today, I only saw the real thing four times

And that was not enough. So, I give you
Three words, wanting to see if only for
A second, the one thing that will buoy me
Up: your smile.

Poem 0152 for Anita: birthday 7 (waterfront)

There’s nothing magical about water.
It’s around and inside us all the time.
Haven’t I heard that humans are two-thirds
Liquid?

Commonplace: this water inside that calls
So many of us to be at or in the water on the
Outside. And then turns our heads again when
We hear it rush,

Or when it scampers groundward from the sky
In rain. Gushing, it reminds us of another
Metaphor — of the connection between water
And emotion:

How an emotional person is drowning in his
Feelings or “she is up to her neck” in whatever
Sadness, anger, shame, fear or joy is her present,
Momentary experience.

In so many ways, we humans are the waterfront
Inside that we long for on the outside. We cannot
And need not escape this truth. It is what it is.
We flow on.

There’s everything magical about water…

Poem 0151 for Anita: birthday 6 (presents)

Somewhere in between traditional and avant garde,
There is the sort of gift that anyone might like to receive.
You can’t find it by magic, nor by calculation.

There was a time, when no thought was required for
Gift-giving. There were only a few choices and for certain
Occasions, there were none.

Now, it seems that the sky’s the limit. But I don’t recommend
Going all the way to the sky. (That would mean that there’s
Nowhere left to go — A hard act to follow.)

Instead, with imagination and intuition flung wide open,
Close your eyes and reach out to comfortably embrace this
Present you will soon present.
