Poem 0182 of 1,000 (for Anita): stillness

I drew stillnessstillness
From The Deck.
Her avatar?
A peace sign.

Right now,
I think my
Avatar is
A race car.

Zipping ahead
Without thought
For the energy
Being consumed
Or the loudness
Generated.
And all this
Speed and combustion
And noise
Is doing so little to
Improve on what
Was already
Here.

Beginning Again

Posted by Susan Bradford on December 22, 2011 under Susan Bradford | Be the First to Comment

I made this drawing a while ago and found it this morning while looking through one of my sketchbooks.  In the bottom right corner, I had written the words, “and so it begins again.”  Because of this it felt appropriate to use it here, as one year is ending and another is about to begin.  The colors seemed to also reflect the spirit of the holidays.  And the imagery felt celebratory as well.

It has long been a practice of mine to use words in conjunction with form.  Sometimes the words come first and then they determine what the imagery will be.  Sometimes it’s the other way around.  Using words helps me to understand my feelings and why I am creating that particular piece.  Sometimes the words remain visible, and at other times the imagery obscures, or partly obscures, the words.  It’s all good.  Using the words is more for me than the viewer.  I don’t really want to pin anything down too much.

Poem 0180 of 1,000 (for Anita): light

Posted by Stan Stewart (Sawyer) on December 2, 2011 under Stan Stewart | 2 Comments to Read

A shaft of sunbeam awakens me at dawn."A shaft of light"
My slumber has been of one dead for a thousand years:
Deadened by thoughts of culpability and then,
Sudden innocence.

Awe and wonder overtake the moment
As the light settles in.
But fear raises expectations of loss and
Grandeur — neither of which hold a place
In this reality, nor a grasp on the epiphany.

(This is the light of choice.

This is the light of choice.

This is the light of choice.)

Opening the shades fully,
I take in the miraculous, blue of
A cloudless
Father sky.

Electric Jazz

The electrified wind controller
Makes unusual sounds.
Nothing like the sax that came before.

Loud!
Amplified to ensure that
My brain and the next will not
Forget this sound!

Now, the piano, too, joins in with the
Electrified sound: funky electric piano-
Zany-funkified-twisted sounds envelope
The room and penetrate walls.

Taking jazz to the streets.

Sultry: you enmesh the fluid lineSpatial Edition
With the voicings unabashed.
Combined: they melt the walls
Around my heart that — times before –
I thought were permanent and solid.

Now, open to the melodious flux,
Ears and eyes drink in the sweet
Honey of wafting sounds and
Impulsive interplay.
